Theophilus London
I Want You Mixtape
Date : May 2nd, 2010

This past week Theophilus London dropped his third mixtape, titled I Want You, directly referencing his cover of Marvin Gaye’s very sexy 1976 Motown “I Want You.”

The tape has production by Scotland's own Hudson Mohawke and appearances by Lightspeed Champion, Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio), a reappearance from Solange, the becoming Ellie Goulding, and of course Theo’s R&B sidekick, Jesse Boykins III (he's got next).

The gracious sounds of I Want You are a cross product of soul and hip hop, adopting sweet sounds of soul from before. I Want You is a case of samples gone right. For example, “Light Years” uses the direct melody of Alicia Myers’s “I Want to Thank You” and the a sample from Marvin Gaye’s ever famous “A Funky Space Reincarnation”—(remember Musiq Soulchild used it on “Until”?). Or how about the short “Hey Wonderful” symphony with Stevie Wonder’s “Love Light in Flight”? Genius.

Another of my favorites, the “Julia (remix)” from the original track “Julia” by The Very Best—Radioclit + Esau Mwamwaya—makes for a good closing and emphasizes the electronic sound of I Want You

A leaked track from Chauffeur—recently (2009) created trio involving Mark Ronson on production, Sam Sparro on vocals and Theophilus London rapping—“Soles of Fire” is pure mastermind. Not much more talk about the trio on the WWW, but I’m sure they’ve got a bunch brewing.

Sidenote: If you didn’t know, Ronson designed sneakers for the ever famous Gucci label last October, as a part of the Gucci Icon-Temporary sneaker collection. The limited Gucci Ronson sneakers were a part of the 18 pair collection. “Soles of Fire” is a theme song for the Ronson-Gucci blue boat shoe.

But in all honesty , the mixtape is a soundtrack to a mellow dance session that you would never want to put on sedatives. In my opinion, it’s addictive, matchless and breaks the boundaries of hip-hop. Theophilus London has been making tremors on blogs for a few years now. He found a way to connect hip-hop with indie-rock, and adding electronic and disco into the mix—a new sound and a perfect concoction.

New Video of the Week

Symphonies –
Dan Black featuring Kid Cudi

Date : March 2, 2010

If you haven’t heard “Symphonies” yet, I highly advise you dedicate some time to check out the new video to the remix with Cleveland’s own Cudi.

The song is catchy with the Rihanna “Umbrella” feel, and the animation in the video is pretty sick. Throwing Cudi on the track enhanced the Mr. Hudson feel, but did more justice to the song, in my opinion.

Dan Black is an electronic artist from the United Kingdom. His album, UN dropped in July last year and “Symphonies” is number one on the track list.

“I lie down in the dust just under your eye
A scrap of paper, thin as vapour
Filling my clothes like smoke
A couple of the wires in my heart are broke
I throw, I miss, something, nothing
But dreams, schemes, moments wasted
Taste I tasted
Fate I'm fated
Re-edited again then copy pasted”

More Music !

Street Syndicate & WFAL Falcon Radio Present :

The Last Action Hero Mixtape
Date: January 26, 2010

And while were on the new music tip, I advise you check out my buddy A-Dub !

Aaron "A-Dub" Anderson is CEO and artist for Street Syndicate Records, out of Detroit, MI. He is also a Radio Personality for WFAL Falcon Radio here on BGSU's campus.

Recently Aaron and the crew dropped "The Last Action Hero Mixtape" presented by Street Syndicate Records & WFAL Falcon Radio - great concept ! The mixtape has guest appearances from Boy Burner, J-Street, Knockout, J-Pryce, K-Bunz, P.L., Sir, AD, D.U.B., Peezy, Roc Corleone, and J-Fin, and production from D.U.B., XV, Boy Burner, Peezy and Young Scolla.

The story behind the mixtape (as told by A-Dub):

"The Last Action Hero" is more than just the title of the mixtape, it describes where I am as a musician.... in a day in time where any and everyone is striving to create their own lane in music, I travel the road that is now less traveled.... A road forged that came before me, the rappers that did more than wear sunglasses, tight jeans and say the word SWAG, They were SUPERHEROS, rappers such as Redman, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac, Scarface, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Eminem, Jay-Z, DMX, Jadakiss, Styles P. and others of the same ilk..."

He says those "rappers were Superheros from every way, from their own personal stories of success, their chosen aliases and their lyrics which are superb in every way." And to comment on his collaborations and partnership, A-Dub says he's chosen to align himself with others he feels embody these ideals for collaborations with for this project, saying "I believe that in the same way movies are bringing superheros to a whole new generation I hope to bring this feeling and type of music back to the masses."

Download The Last Action Hero Mixtape today !

B.YONEST
Date: January 26, 2010

What do I do when I hear music I like? Write about it.

I introduce you to Indianapolis native B.Yonest, out of Columbus, Ohio. He describes his music as “Eminem and Talib Kweli's wordplay. Jay-Z and Andre 3000's swagger and RedMan/Method Man's showmanship, energy and attitude” and no doubt, that’s just how he sounds ! He makes the type of hip-hop you can listen to when you’re thinking or when you’re drinking. And his shit is legit!

From performing in front of a 16,000 crowd (complete with couches on fire and naked streaker’s) to working with familiar names like DJ EDSKI, Rashad and the Elevator, Fly.Union, Copywrite, to name a few, he’s promoting himself and still making his own way. He’s a truthful dude. Confidence out to ying yang. Not much more to say than, he’s honest. B.Yonest.

M.I.A is No Longer M.I.A !
Date : Monday, January 18th, 2010

I may be super late on reporting this , but with the release of M.I.A ‘s new video for her single “There’s Space for Ol Dat I See,” the artist has continued talk about the New York Times releasing information about her in relationship with terrorism.

Simply put , the NY Times released information about M.I.A and M.I.A ‘s father being terrorists . Apparently , her father was once a part of the LTTE , The Liberation Tiger Tamils of Eelam , which the FBI finds to be a deadly terrorist group that perfected suicide bombing , created the suicide belt , used women in suicide attacks , and recruited child soldiers . NY Times , and other reporting organizations say M.I.A plainly developed her own correlation between herself with the terrorist group , through imagery and lyrics provided in her videos and music .

In between time , a Sri Lankan rapper , DeLon , created a diss remix over “Paper Planes,” calling her the opposite of a freedom fighter . Unfortunately , his video was removed from YouTube by Interscope Records , claiming it was endangering M.I.A ‘s reputation .

M.I.A is keeping people talking , with her once in a while tweets , posting pictures and articles related to the issue . A week ago she released her new video via TwitVid . The video is trippy and the song is slick . Click the link to check it out .

Anyways , all this talk about what M.I.A does or doesn’t do does not alter the way I feel about her music . Good music is good music . Its innovative and appealing . We can only wish to listen to artists who live with morals and good objectives . Unfortunately , sometimes that doesn’t always happen .

I thought this story was interesting .

Check It Out:
Through The Wire: The Words & Lyrics of Kanye West
with Illustrations by Bill Plympton

Date: Tuesday, December 8, 2009

So, last month a book project, “Through The Wire: The Words and Lyrics of Kanye West” was released. Artist Kanye West and illustrator Bill Plympton teamed up to create a masterpiece in word and picture form. The book features twelve of Kanye’s songs, and each are accompanied with further explaination of Kanye’s lyrics, comments from Kanye, and best of all, graphic illustrations from world-renowned illustrator and animator, Bill Plympton.

After completing the “Glow In The Dark” project, a collection of Kanye photographs, pictured by Nabil Elderkin, “Through The Wire” was released just in time for the holidays!

“Through the Wire is a graphic memoir that illustrates the lyrics of twelve Kanye West songs to tell his story, from his decision to drop out of college to pursue his dreams in music, through his days spent folding chinos at the Gap while struggling at night to make a name as a producer, through the pivotal car accident that eventually set him on the course to stardom and the epiphany of realizing exactly who he had become.”

Plympton, out of Portland, is an Academy and Grammy Awarded-nominated animator, director, cartoonist, and illustrator. You may recognize his work from Kanye’s “Heard Em Say” video released in 2005.

Above: A freeze frame from Plympton's illustration contribution in Kanye's "Heard Em Say" video.

He illustrates and directs a few short cartoon films. Watch the one minute short film, “Dog Days”, here

Above: A freeze frame of one of Plympton's short films, "Hot Dog"

Anyways, they make a pretty cool team. The book retails for $22.00. What a great Christmas gift for a Kanye or cartoon fan!

New Music Monday
“Counseling” – Clipse featuring Nicole Hurst (produced by the Neptunes)

Date: November 30, 2009

Counseling,” produced by The Neptunes, features Nicole Renee Hurst on the hook. You may recognize her on projects from FWMJ’s Rappers I Know website—a boutique music label focused on helping expose under-recognized rap and soul artists, based out of Houston, TX (more to come on My Spin). Hurst has a Keri Hilson sound, but a completely different aura. She gives off jazz and soul vibes and has sang backup for Joy Denalene.

“Maybe I’m crazy
Maybe just maybe
It’s hard finding time
Can’t tell me I’m lazy
The way my phone ring may seem a bit shady
I’m bout my cash money ma
Maybe its baby
How you persuade me via email
Fresh out the shower
Sending pics from your cell
Wish I was there taking flics myself
Then hit delete I can’t afford to leave a trail”

“Counseling,” off the junior album from Clipse, Til the Casket Drops showcases guest appearances from Kanye West, Keri Hilson, Yo Gotti, Rick Ross, even Cam’Ron comes out from hiding, and of course the familiar sounds of Pharell. Clipse takes a venture into different production, featuring not only The Neptunes, but production from The Hitmen (Sean C & LV), and DJ Khalil.

Until then, download “Counseling”!

The xx - Infinity (Flufftronix Remix)
Date: November 23. 2009

It’s the start to a short week, which means extra work.

The xx has something to keep me going. “Infinity” is a breakup song. The original is nice, but
Flufftronix, a DJ out of Philadelphia, remixes the song, perfect for the dance floor. Best part of all? It has a pretty epic dubstep.

The video can be found on
YouTube.

The xx is a band from England, about 5 years old, known to favor Wicked Game. Their self titled album, The xx is out in stores. So go get it!

And before they travel back overseas, check them out- The xx and Friendly Fires at The Bottom Lounge, in near west side Chicago, on December 1st.

THROWBACK THURSDAY THOUGHT :
Tamagotchi’s

Date: Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Do you remember Tamagotchi’s?

Tamagotchi’s were those little egg shaped digital handheld pets from the middle-late 1990’s. You could feed it, play games with it, clean up its waste, check its age, discipline, hunger, and happiness levels. There were two generations of the Tamagotchi by the time the decade ended.

The Japanese story went like this:
“They are little alien creatures from Planet Tamagotchi, who crash landed on earth, and The Professor and his assistant Mikachu found them. The Professor built them little egg shaped protection cases so they could survive on earth, then Mikachu painted some, took them to school and started the Tamagotchi craze.”

I remember taking my purple Tamagotchi to school. And when they no longer permitted us to have them, I’d leave it home and make my mom take care of it. My generation took Tamagotchi’s seriously. Did you have one?

CHECK IT OUT : Discover Your True Colours
Date: Thursday, November 19, 2009

A few of my friends introduced me to PositivelyMary.com, a website that provides fun personality tests and quizzes. On of the quizzes measures your shopping personality, but the best one is “What Are Your True Colors?”

It takes a few minutes. The quiz operates off of a ranking of groupings of three descriptive words you’d classify yourself under. It sounds confusing, but it is easy to use. The quiz classifies you under a colour, blue, green, gold or orange. I found it cool to see how the quiz classified me.

Above: Mary Miscisin, creator of the Personality Colour Test. This wheel includes the primary personality colours and red and purple which are mixtures.

I took the test twice to see if I got the same results, and I did. I am categorized under “Adventurous Orange,” which basically described me as quick-witted, charming, spontaneous, playful, injects fun into work, lives in here and now, risk taker, creative, enjoys diversity, variety and competition. The results said I am a multi-tasker, cheerful, energetic, bold, high visibility performer (visual learner), performs well under pressure, resilient, enjoys problem solving, negotiator, I could go on, but \ you get the point. The quiz also tells you who are some famous people in your color. JFK, Amelia Earhart, FDR, and Winston Churchill were all oranges. Which colour are you?

Check it out here. In order to take it, you must register with your name and email address, but so far I haven’t received any junk email! Once you determine your color, you can find out what it means here.

You Oughta Know :
Cleveland Clothing Company

Date: November 16, 2009

Cleveland Clothing Company is an online and brand retailer based in the greater Cleveland, Ohio area. The company is relatively young – founded in March of this year. Although recently established, sole proprietor Nick Luedy began forming ideas for shirts about a year ago. Nick started the company alone after graduating with an Associates degree in Graphic Design from Cuyahoga Community College. The shirts have a wide range of familiar Cleveland themed-designs – ranging from a “Run DMC” style shirt to a “Coca Cola” style shirt – all encasing the incredible Cleveland, Ohio, for an affordable $15 a pop. The shirts are printed locally and on “nothing but American Apparel because it’s the best,” said Luedy. To find out more about the company, I asked him a few questions. Ladies and gentlemen, the Cleveland Clothing Company!

What made you start CCC?
I felt like their was a lack of Cleveland themed t-shirts around. I worked at a small screen printing company in the summer of 2008 and really fell in love with apparel printing. I wanted to actually put my design skills to use with something I could sell on my own.

Who is your target market/fan base?
Skaters, bands, anyone 16+. I try to have something for everyone.

How long did it took for your clothing line to achieve a comfortable fan base?
I’m still working on this! It’s not easy doing it all yourself!

What do you believe is the most effective thing you did to advertise your company?
Facebook is really a wonderful tool for my tee shirt business. Westside Skates carrying my t-shirts was the most effective thing I did to advertise my shirts. I’m so grateful that they like my shirts and carry a good collection of them.

Your website, clevelandclothingco.net is attractive. Do you make majority of your sales via the e-store?
I have an equal amount of shirts sold between Westside Skates and my online store.

Which shirt is your best seller?
CLVLND (RUN DMC style shirt), pictured above

That’s my personal favorite! With the black background. Which do you prefer?
I prefer my “LOYAL” shirt which says Cavs&Indians&Browns (pictured below) because I’m a huge Cavs fan.

Where do you see CCC in 5 years?
I see it still running! Hopefully in my shops.

What is CCC working on that SUPAFLYMAG and our readers look forward to?
New Tees and Totes! Also some collab’s with local t-shirt designers.

Take a look at more of the graphics below, and continue to check out the online store for new projects from Cleveland Clothing Company! And order some shirts! Support local businesses!

Stand Corrected : Lei Rock

Date: Monday, November 16th, 2009

I was debating whether or not to include the following interview in the You Ought to Know portion of my blog, or classify it as a Stand Corrected article. And well, I decided it fits more in the Stand Corrected category, because, I didn’t think much of the subjects work until I read more into it. She is very talented!

I’d like to introduce you to Liesha, host of Jukebox with Lei Rock. Leisha hosts a podcast show online Friday nights, fueled by her love of music and “to help support and promote starving artists that do not have a gate way to promote their selves through the radio air ways and concerts.” Naming the show after her blog and nickname, she says the show is not only to “broadcast musical talents but is something that I wanted to experience for a prospect career.”

I invite you to check out Lei Rock, the “walking jukebox,” and learn more about the show “Jukebox with Lei Rock”! So without further a due, ladies and gentlemen, I bring you Ms. Lei Rock!

So, tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Aleisha Williams also known as Leisha, Lei or LeiRock by my friends. I am twenty years old I reside in Maple Heights, Ohio and I attend Cuyahoga Community College as a Pharmacy major.
Where did the nickname Lei Rock come from?
The nickname LeiRock came from my best friend’s brother J-Rock and people called me Lei. I was a part of a dance group and on my MySpace I had posted my name as LeiRock and my friends liked it and just went along with it so I have been LeiRock ever since then even though at first I thought it was corny but people like it.

I understand you have a podcast show. What’s going on with that?
Yes, I do have an online podcast show on BlogTalkRadio.com called Jukebox with LeiRock. It is going very well. I am new to this program and how it works but I’m progressing getting interviews with Indie artist and bloggers that co-host with me and until I get the hang of it I plan to move onto mainstream artist to be guests on my show.

How long have you been doing this?
I have been running my podcast show for six weeks now.

What made you start the show?
The thing that made me start the show was people u-streaming and playing music. I thought about doing an u-stream but I didn’t want people to see me on webcam and I felt a YouTube show playing music would be lame. A couple of my friends also said that I should do a podcast after I asked for their advice because one of them calls me a “walking jukebox”. So I researched and spoke with people who have a podcast and just went with my instincts and started the podcast show.

What is your music background? What got you interested in music?
My musical background varies from different things and genres. While growing up my grandmother played 1490 WJMO a radio station with pure Motown music and oldies, vinyl records such as Sly and the Family Stone, Al Green, Aretha Franklin to The Mississippi Mass Choir and Michael Jackson. He was ALWAYS being blasted in our stereo. I would hang out with my aunts and they played Cece and Bebe Winans, Janet Jackson, Tevin Campbell, KRS One, and etc. You get the point I was around music everywhere I went. My mom bought me a keyboard even though I asked for a drum set at the age of eight I taught myself for a little while then later got interested in sports, and sang in the middle school choir and also in church. So my musical interest and background has started from where I can remember my childhood till now.

Who is someone that has influenced you?
Someone who has influenced me in music was the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Michael Jackson with their story lines in their music the messages and originated sounds.

What types of music do you prefer?
The types of music that I prefer are all types classical, metal, country, hip hop, rap, blues, all of it because they all come from each other. It is a never ending process from samples, lyrics and performances. I sit and listen to all the genres and break down the whole song from the instruments used, the technology and where the beats or music samples came from. That was something that I was taught in fifth grade music and every since then I have kept that habit.

Who is your favorite artist? Why?
My favorite artist is Donny Hathaway because of the significance of his music. He started in the church singing at the age of three, he was a piano prodigy, the nation’s youngest gospel singer and he has done so many things during his life as he struggled also. But the thing about it was you would never know that with the great music that he made such as “The Closer I get to you”, “This Christmas” “Lord Help Me”, and “Someday We’ll all Be Free” his voice made you sit and think as he sang every word and you think about life and if he could cover all his troubles and make it appear everything was good and not complain in lyrics and send the message that something has to change and speak it to existence I can too.

What songs do you play the most? Why?
The songs that I play the most are hip hop, Rnb, old school music and independent artist to share my music interest and to support and broadcast the artists that are trying to make it and present their art work through the internet if popular stations are not giving the support or chances.

What’s your favorite radio station in Cleveland? Radio personality? Why?
I really do not listen to the radio but if I were to, my favorite station would be 93.1 WZAK, my favorite radio personality would be Kym Sellers because of her presence on the radio she works hard and even at times she does not seem lively she has that cool and calm voice.

Besides your radio show, what else do you do?
Other things that I do besides my radio show is that I blog, I am a free lance blogger, network with artists in other states, and support artists and their music and I dance whenever I get the chance to even though I am not on a dance team anymore.

Why should we check out your show?
I think people should check out my show because I feel I have a great music interest and if you are a music lover it should be automatic. My mission for the podcast is to help promote music that is not being heard and to also play music that people are familiar with. I recently brought on a guest co-host from Michigan named Ben Frank and an artist from Akron, Ohio named MaticTouch. I support other artists and you can call and listen in on what is going on.

When and how can we listen to your radio show?
You can check my show out Friday nights at 11 p.m. on www.BlogTalkRadio.com/Jukebox-with-LeiRock or if you do not have a computer you can call in to listen at (646) 381-4488.

Explore some music with Ms. Lei Rock, Friday nights at 11pm! I know I am!

Current Music Presents: Embedded with Mos Def in Japan
Date: November 9, 2009

As I finish writing my review for Mos Def’s most recent release “The Ecstatic,” I came across a recent Current Music episode of Embedded with Mos Def in Japan.

The video is an hour long special, following Mos Def through Tokyo and Osaka, shopping with Mos in the streets Harajuku- the fashion neighborhood of Japan, join him backstage and in the crowd at his shows at sold out venues, into Japanese franchises, baseball and Sumo Wrestling events, and travel with-by cab, train and car-on his seven day tour performing “The Ecstatic.”

“I'm a travellin' man
Movin through places, space and time(space and tiiiime)
Gotta lotta things I got to do
But God willin' I'm comin back to you
Baby boo
I'm leavin”
–“Travellin’ Man” – Mos Def

The video is intellectual, interesting, and humorous. Mos gives his insight on why people of Japan are wearing medical masks, schools us on Japan’s fashion, warns America about the new-coming Mos Burger restaurants, comments on science, gives us in site on what inspired “The Ecstatic” and tells us why he wears a mask on stage (with reference to the Madvilliany album).

Above and below: “You do not understand. I cannot wait to go through airport security with this shit on. Come on lady, of course I will take it off and put it through security. You know that this is gonna beep beep beep beep. This is the sickest shit ever. Makes me wanna shoot a video. I just wanna go outside and talk to random strangers. Just because I have this jacket on. I would lick this jacket if I could.” Mos Def commenting on the new jacket he picked up at Japan’s Harajuku district.

Above: Mos Def's jacket comes from Neighborhood, a street culture store located in the Harajuku district. This is the Acne Studded Jacket from the WTAPS 2008 Fall/Winter collection.

Above: “50 Cent? Do you have your own burger franchise in Asia? I think NOT.”

Above: Mos Def performing in Tokyo. “Each crowd is different. It is a dialogue. They’re completing the process. So it’s not a monologue. Its like I am giving them a certain amount of energy, and they’re giving me a certain amount of energy, and that completes the show.”

Check out the video as you await my reviews for Mos Def’s “The Ecstatic” and “The Ecstatic” by author Victor LaVelle.

Nike Dunk Hi SB “Gucci 2005”
Originally released in 2005, the Gucci Dunk Hi’s were a part of the Team Manager Pack, which included some of the most recognized SB’s – the Stussy, the Tiffany, the Alien FC, and a routine Blazer and Team Edition. The 2005 edition was designed by the staff at Girl Skateboards. Girl Skateboards is a part of Girl Distributions. Girl Distributions also owns Lakai Limited Footwear, a skateboarding shoe producer. Girl Skateboards, being affiliated with Lakai Limited Footwear, caused friction when Lakai found out the “wood making” portion of their company was doing a collaboration with Nike SB, who also makes skate shoes. The shoes were released in a limited quanitity – 29 pairs worldwide.

Nike Dunk Hi SB “Gucci 2009”
The long awaited re-release of the Gucci SB’s will be included in the Holiday 2009 collection. The 2009 edition is basically the same as the 2005’s, but there is a little less fraying around the edges of the denim. Different leather is used, and the shoe includes a fat tongue! The 2009 edition has a black heel tab, whereas the 2005’s have a black one. Very detailed photos have been released online, but actual release date has not been determined.

MY TRIP :
Ohio University HallOUween

Date: Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

On Friday, myself and six of my girlfriends left for Columbus, a short stop on our journey to Athens where we would soon participate in the biggest Halloween celebrations in Ohio. We arrived in Columbus and attended the Krimson & Skream Kostume Party at Club Boma, hosted by the Ohio State Kappa’s. We stayed at a friend’s house and the next morning we were on our way to Ohio University, excited to partake in the festivities!

Me (left) and Aletra (right) at the Kappa party in Columbus at Club Boma.

We checked into our hotel, which was about two miles from campus. In the afternoon we drove through OU and witnessed people already partying and in-costume. We got way excited when we saw everyone already dressed, so we went back to the hotel, got dressed (for three hours-you know how girls are) and pre-gamed, of course. At 9:00pm we went headed to campus, once again, ready to party!

Athens for Halloween is a tradition for college students-not just Ohio University students. People come from all over. On Halloween night the population of Athens temporarily doubles and sometimes triples because so many people come to join the celebration. Court Street, a main street downtown the center of campus , is full of live music, food, beverages. The street is shut down to cater to Halloween.

As Halloween tradition goes, of course people dress up for Halloween. At Ohio University, creativity is beyond belief.

There was actually seven girls dressed up exactly alike.

I am super excited to go next year!

You Ought 2 Know:
Krink & KR
Yo, so the easiest way to introduce you to KR (for those of you who don’t know), is to first knowledge you on Krink. Krink, simply put, is a brand name of inks and makers, made and manufactured in our United States. The markers were invented by Craig Costello, alias KR. So, the brand ‘Krink” comes from the acronym “KR” and “ink” together. Costello developed his own markers in the beginning of the 1990’s and started selling them in the familiar Alife out of New York City. Apparently the line of markers (which there is a huge assortment), comes in any and every color. To get his brand out there, Krink has collaborated with THE well-known brands such as Nike, Alife, Kid Robot, Married to the Mob, Juxtapoz, Burton and even Carhartt.

Before his big break, the Krink website called Costello “a terrible art student, a semi-successful vandal, and an entrepreneur who learned everything the hard way.” KR hailed from Queens and hung around the graffiti writing skater/B-boy scene. A walk through Queens? Graffiti. Everywhere. Apparently, graffiti was a lifestyle, an attitude-and it was reflected from the economy. From sharing to stealing, graffiti was no longer just adhered to trains, but it exploded onto highways and the streets of Queens. Grafitti-ers (for lack of better word) experimented by using tools that they would soon find out, would fade in the sun or bleed off their canvas. So came the trial and error, and soon arrived “Krink.” Successfully, he shared it with friends and fellow graffiti artists. Alife had just opened in 1998, same time Costello made his way back to New York from a long haul in San Francisco. BAM! From there, the two forms of street art made their mark-collaboratively. And Krink developed into what it is today.

MY SPIN : Daru & Rena
Well, it’s quite easy to say R&B has evolved in, oh, the last two decades, give or take. Majority of the R&B genre, to me, is garbage, but then again, I’ve always had a taste for anything out the ordinary. Looking at the Billboard top Hip Hop/R&B songs as of last week, Maxwell leads with Pretty Wings, which is in no way a complaint, but followed directly by Mario & Gucci Mane’s “Break Up” and “Under” by Pleasure P. Disappointing? Eh, to most, no, but yes, I am a bit bothersome with the caliber of R&B at this day in age.

But I find comfort in enjoying the spin-off projects of real R&B, as I see it. The Muhsinah, the Georgia Anne Muldrow, the Kissey Asplund, the Algebra Blesset, the Nia Andrews. At any rate, it only gives sense to give props to prevailing Daru & Rena.
I heard Daru & Rena back in May, added them to my collection, but passed the duo by. I regret it now because Daru & Rena has become one of my favorite projects.
The twosome is a brother and sister combo hailing from Detroit, Michigan. Producer Daru Jones has previously worked with Slum Village, another Detroit-native-project and has been around for close to ten years now. Rena plays the vocal role, being both a singer and a songwriter, she is making a musically inclined entrance.

At first listen, the project, Feel the Love sounds straight out of the East Coast 1990’s hip-hop- its heavy, and its aggressive beats are choppy, uses samples, and the voice work flows well with the drum’s kicks and snares. The sound embodies the sound of J Dilla and Slum Village, which only makes sense since Daru grew up in Michigan, making it easy for Dilla to have a strong influence on his work. Rena’s singing performance is superior but I can picture an emcee killing the beats as well. The group even posed a tribute to Dilla, with “Spirit Dilla, Part 3” on their 2007 project Turn It On.

Don’t hesitate to check out Feel the Love. Of course the album is available online, but yo! find a way to go support good music man!
