Producer M. Stacks Interview

Date: Wednesday, December 9, 2009

Most of you have already been introduced to producer and DJ M. Stacks. He is affiliated with major names such as Kidz In The Hall, J.R. Writer, Curren$y, Cory Gunz and the Cleveland natives Chip the Ripper, Al Fatz and Ray Cash, and he has already been on SUPAFLYMAG. Of course there is always more than what we see standing in front of the turntables, so let’s learn more about what goes on behind the equipment and in the mind of M. Stacks!

Tell us a little about yourself.

Miguel Brown Jr. "M. Stacks", originally from Hawaii, raised in ATL, transplanted to Shaker Heights. I spent my teen years in Shaker Heights when I was 12 years old, so that is what I represent. I'm 21 years old. I attended Shaker Heights High School, the alma mater to Kid Cudi, Gerald Levert, and Paul Newman. Attended CSU, never graduated. Ethnicity: Filipino.

What is the significance in “M.Stacks”? How did you get the name?

The "M" stands for Miguel, the "Stacks" was added on because growing up people assumed that I was wealthy for living in Shaker Heights. Kids that I dealt with from the inner city started calling me "Stacks".

What made you start producing and getting involved in the music game?

I sucked at school. Hip-Hop was the best option for me.

How long have you’ve been DJing? Been DJing since 2002, Been producing music since 2002.

How did the madness start? How did you begin producing and DJing? I started producing music/DJing in the 7th grade when I got expelled from school. My parents made me promise them to get focused and find my passion. So I did. It was music. I was raised on hip-hop my entire life, from Wu-Tang to UGK. So I had $100 in the bank, I took it out, and put my first down payment on a multi-track recorder and keyboard. Got it out of layaway 3 months later and now I’m here.

What was your first booking?

My first DJ booking was my 8th grade year. It was a basement party for some kids from my school. I got paid $60 to DJ from 7pm-1am. Now this was back in the day before Serato existed, niggas had big dusty crates full of records. We used vinyl! Lol The music was skipping and I had no clue how to scratch or blend.

What/who inspires you?

Pete Rock, Just Blaze, The Alchemist…the list goes on.

Who is your biggest influence?

My biggest influence is my fans. I love running into fans in the streets, at shows, and online. They show so much love. I don't care how much money I make, it’s all about the love. They influence me the most. Their opinion matters.

Who is your favorite DJ (besides yourself)? Why?

Favorite DJ is Million $ Mano, because he plays a diverse selection of music and keeps you entertained. I just attended one of his shows while I was out in Chicago last week with my guy Naledge from Kidz In the Hall. It was great.

Who would you classify your fan base as?

Eclectic and eccentric black kids from middle class homes.

Are you related to anyone significant in the media/entertainment industry?

Yeah, Bobby Brown is my father. Chris Brown is my 2nd cousin, Foxy Brown is my ex-wife, and Judge Joe Brown is damn near like family to me.

Have you ever DJ’d in any other cities?

I've DJ’d in pretty much every major club in all the surrounding cities.

What was the biggest crowd you DJ’d for?

University of Toledo: 2,000 people. I love spinning for the college crowd, they seem to appreciate my music the most. They are also the most open to hear new stuff.

What is the craziest thing to happen to you while on stage?

I was spinning at a loft party near downtown, and a fight broke out. I mean EVERYBODY was throwing stuff, all the females ran and hid behind my equipment, and guys were throwing my speakers around. People were jumping out of window. It was crazy.

What makes Cleveland, Cleveland?

Cleveland is unique because it's a small city, but it has a big city feel, also it's the birthplace of Rock n Roll. Shout out to Screamin' Jay Hawkins.

Would you ever want to leave?

I'm always gone. But I always bring it back home.

What event was the most fun to DJ at?

The funnest event I've ever DJ’d was a show for the big homie Wiz Khalifa a couple weeks back. He was mad cool, and the kids in the audience brought us weed…But I don't smoke. lol

What is your favorite artist to DJ for? Why?

I love DJing for UGK Records (Bun-B& Pimp C's record label). They always show mad love. Free shirts, and food n shit lol.

How do you choose what songs to play at different events?

I feed off the crowd and the atmosphere.

What is the most recent event that you DJ’d at?

The last event I DJ’d at was Spotlight Saturdays @ Martini 20/20 in the Flats.

How does your music affect your surroundings?

My music gives a soundtrack to the surroundings. No one was able to do it, but I did. I gave Cleveland a soundtrack.

Who would you like to work with?

R.I.P. Pimp C, Phil Collins, Nick Cannon.

What hidden responsibilities come with the DJ role?

Most of the time the DJ is not just the DJ, they are also the host of the party, and essentially the entire entertainment for the night. So when I'm spinning, I’m not just playing music…I'm performing.

What do you do for fun, or what interests do you have, besides DJing?

Blogging from jet planes.

Do you have any upcoming events?

Spinning for Raekwon and Noreaga on Dec. 11th @ Peabodys

Spotlight Saturdays @ Martini 20/20 EVERY SATURDAY

2010 Ohio Producers Battle @ Martini 20/20 Sat. Jan. 2nd 2010

Since we are The Original Street Culture Magazine, fashion and clothing trends play a major role in everyday street culture. Clothing simultaneously influences people as does music.

What brand have you been wearing lately?

IM-King Clothing. I love their stuff. They are actually my sponsors. I got boxes and boxes of their shit in my closet. I like their quality and originality. Love their color schemes, and their prices! www.imking.com!

Fitted’s, beanie’s, snapback’s or fedora’s?

Berets

Ties, bowties, or scarves? Ear-muffs

There’s more to the man behind the turntables. I’ve got a few questions for you. Let’s get to know more about your personality and put your craft on hold for just a moment.

How do you feel about DJ AM’s passing this past August?

It was a tragedy. He was talented.

What is the last pair of sneaker’s you bought? Did you see the DJ AM Dunks (pictured below)? What do you think?

Adidas x Hiroshi collab. The Dj AM dunks are aight.

What do you want for Christmas?

Some money and some attention.

How do you feel about the new Chip mixtape, The Cleveland Show?

Dopeness. Chip is dope.

What is your astrological sign? Gemini

What is your favorite TV show? Homeboys in Outer Space
What is the first record you ever bought? Crime Mobb (first vinyl)

Are you looking forward to Clipse’s new album, Til The Casket Drops?

Yeah, love those dudes. They make me wanna sell drugs

What is your top five favorite songs on the radio right now?

Lady Ga-Ga: Paparazzi
Trey Songz: Say Aah
Miley Cyrus: Party in the USA
B.E.P.: Meet me Halfway
Yo Gotti- 5 Star Chick

Kid Cudi was nominated for three Grammy’s! What did he do differently that other Cleveland artists are struggling with?

He understands how to cater to the peoples ears.

Did you ever imagine being here?

Definitely not. 2 years ago I was lost, and had no clue what the future had in store for me.

Where would you like to be five years from now?

Behind my laptop collecting big checks.

How do you remain humble?

I don't. I’m an arrogant prick. That’s what my grandma told me. Lol

I see you’ve marketed yourself on Facebook quite a bit. What do you think is the most effective way you’ve marketed yourself as a DJ? The least effective?

Most effective way I marketed myself was by attaching myself to bigger names. Sometimes getting that co-sign from someone who relevant is all you need. The lease effective way is by spamming people's myspace/facebook/twitter pages. "YO CHECK OUT MY MUSIC, CHECK OUT MY MUSIC, CHECK OUT MY MUSIC, CHECK OUT MY MUSIC" People just find that shit annoying, and chances are they won’t check out your music.

What projects or events are you working on that SUPAFLYMAG.com can look forward to?

Working on Naledge (Kidz In the Hall) new album, also check out J.R. Writers new mixtape, I got a couple placements on that.

Where can SUPAFLYMAG readers catch you on the weekends and listen to you on a weekly basis?

Fridays and Saturdays @ Martini 20/20. Come out and have a drink, and listen to some good tunes.
